Destruction of Kuala Lumpur’s Green Lungs

By 6 April, 2008February 18th, 2020No Comments

We denounce the development that has already begun at the KL side of Bukit Gasing. As of the 27th of March, 2008, Gasing Meridian has commenced the clearing of greenery on the proposed site of construction.

To date very little information has been released by DBKL to the public regarding the details of the development and it’s impact on the surrounding areas. A petition to DBKL for a public hearing regarding the development has also been refused.

The Development Order for the project was also granted by DBKL despite protests from the local residents and assurances by DBKL in November 2007 that the Development Order would not be given prior to further discussions with local residents.

We regret these decisions by DBKL that overlook the concerns of local residents and taxpayers who will be effected by this project as well as the dangerously destructive effect it will have on the environment.

We call on DBKL to ensure that no work on the proposed site continues as Judicial Review on this matter has been granted by the High Court on 2nd April 2008. However we regret to say that Gasing Meridan has continued with hoarding works on the proposed site in violation of the court order.

The proposed development on Bukit Gasing is another addition to the spate of hillside developments in Kuala Lumpur that have been approved by DBKL despite numerous issues surrounding these developments. Numerous protests by rate-payers, environmental issues and safety issues have been ignored by DBKL. The slow destruction of Kuala Lumpur’s green lungs are deeply regrettable. We urge the authorities to reconsider such irreversible damage to Kuala Lumpur’s few remaining green lungs that must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.

We, Members of Parliament from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor from KeADILan and DAP and PAS, call for all work by Gasing Meridian to be stopped immediately whilst the matter is solved in the courts. We also call on DBKL to ensure that all work by Gasing Meridian ceases to continue.
