PERMATANG PAUH: Vice-President of Keadilan, Nurul Izzah Anwar started her nationwide tour on Saturday in her father’s hometown in Pulau Pinang, on her quest to empower young adults nationwide to get engaged and “Together Save Malaysia.”
The tour aims to create engagement with local youths in cities nationwide from diverse backgrounds of race, religion and economic status.
Nurul Izzah said the sessions, named ‘Dialog Anak Muda’, will focus on local issues overlooked in the government’s choreographed TN50 townhall meet-ups. She explained that special attention must be given to the problems faced by the growing number of marginalised youth without proper access to quality education and jobs.
“For more than a decade we have failed to make progress for those who need progress the most,” Nurul Izzah pointed out. She emphasized, “These youths have serious questions and those in power must be attentive to craft policies that will really make a difference for our shared future. They are worried about their own futures, but they also care very much about the success of our nation.”
The first meet-up was held at a local restaurant here in Permatang Pauh, attended by 300 people who took the opportunity to raise issues such as insufficient access to education, rising cost of living and ways to increase the quality of life.
“We talked about the fate of factory workers here in Permatang Pauh, most of them are youths and earning uncompetitive salaries, barely enough to make ends meet.”
“We also discussed higher education opportunities, especially to late-bloomers and those who didn’t do well in school and how the vocational education should be broadened”, said Nurul Izzah.
Participants at the dialogue also raised the issue of young women in Penang and how they could further be empowered at work or school.
“It’s important for everyone to discuss and work together to find solutions for these issues,” she added.
The dialogue was also attended by Penang Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Rashid Hasnon who took the opportunity to respond to questions as well.
