Evidence-based Project

Conditional cash transfer programs provide cash assistance to needy families that are conditioned upon specific requirements. We have mobilised this technology in our Love My Neighbourhood program. Together with MyKasih, support is provided to B40 families using a cashless transaction method. RM 80 is transferred every month for a year via their MyKad, to be used for groceries and basic necessities at select supermarkets. The program currently supports 185 families in Penang.

Program Overview

To date, MyKasih has channeled RM 260 million via the MyKasih cashless payment system to more than 280,000 families in over 400 locations nationwide.

The scope of the MyKasih system has expanded beyond food aid and student bursaries to include cashless payments for public transportation, fuel, medical treatments and utility bills.

Through this system, the MyKad account becomes the single main account to which low-income households can use to access multiple welfare products or services. Use of the MyKad allows aid to be targeted to the right person, enabling it to be distributed in an efficient, transparent and secure way. This feature is likely to be one of the first of its kind in welfare distribution in the world.

The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Johor and Sarawak State Governments, Lembaga Zakat Selangor, Zakat Pulau Pinang and Majlis Agama Islam Melaka, have also been using the innovative MyKasih system for their respective welfare programmes for the underprivileged.

MyKasih Love My

School

Providing a social safety net for school children in Permatang Pauh featuring education and health benefits.

Program Overview

A social safety net, critical for all Malaysians, is especially important for children in order for them to focus on their learning and development. The Love My School programme, launched in collaboration with MyKasih, will ensure that 591 students across four schools in Permatang Pauh will receive RM 60 a month via their individual ‘Kad Pintar’ to be used on food allowances at their canteens and ‘back to school’ products.

Evidence-based Project

Studies have shown that school children fare better at school when they have access to adequate nutrition. Students’ participation in programs that increase access to nutrition (typically, breakfast programmes) has been proven to improve student behavior, cognition, and academic performance.

At present, the MyKasih Foundation has sponsored over 20,000 urban and rural students across the country in their cashless bursary program. The cashless system was initially formulated for use in a national fuel subsidies program, but was later repurposed for use in MyKasih’s charity programs.

Where MyKasih aid has penetrated a school, attendance has spiked. The resulting improvement in motivation affects everyone, from the students themselves to the teachers and parents, to the community at large.
